Liquid nitrogen (LIN) vaporizer sizing

Liquid nitrogen is one of the most common services for ambient air vaporizers. Sizing for LIN follows the same fundamentals as any cryogenic service, with a few practical considerations worth calling out.

Define the LIN demand

Start with the required nitrogen flow rate and the pressure your process needs. Flow can come from a known SCFH/SCFM figure, downstream equipment requirements, or measured consumption. Pressure determines both performance and the MAWP rating required for the unit.

Match the duty cycle

Decide whether the vaporizer runs intermittently or continuously. Continuous LIN demand often calls for multiple vaporizers manifolded with alternating defrost cycles so one unit can shed frost while another carries the load.

Consider the install environment

Published ratings depend on gas service, ambient conditions, humidity, wind, pressure, run time, frost buildup, and installation spacing. Cold-climate and high-humidity sites need extra attention because they affect both capacity and frost behavior. Confirm final sizing with FWM.

What FWM needs to recommend a LIN vaporizer

  • Required nitrogen flow rate (SCFH or SCFM)
  • Operating pressure (PSIG)
  • Duty cycle (continuous vs. intermittent, hours/day)
  • Install location and ambient conditions
  • Footprint and connection requirements
